Overview
On October 28th, 2015, the Select Board voted to create a Taxation Aid Committee. The committee will consist of the Chair of the Board of Assessors, the Town Treasurer, and 3 residents appointed by the Select Board.
The role of this committee will be to share information available on existing aid programs, investigate and explore new programs that may be available to the Town, including MGL Ch. 60.3, D, and make recommendations on those programs to the Select Board.
At the Special Town Meeting on March 21st, 2016 the Town voted unanimously to accept MGL Ch.60 s.3D allowing for the creation of an "Aid to the Elderly and Disabled Taxation Fund" and a formal Taxation Aid Committee consisting of the Chair of the Board of Assessors, The Town Treasurer, and three residents to be appointed by the Select Board.
Finance Assistance / Questions
If you require financial assistance with taxes or have questions, please get in touch with one of the following departments. There are several programs in place to assist those in need. All requests for assistance are confidential
Taxation Aid Fund
The updated application and guidelines for Taxation Aid Funds for FY2023 (PDF) have been posted. Below are general guidelines from our current application cycle.
Taxation Aid assistance is available for those who meet the following qualifications:
- Mendon resident for 5 years or more
- Reside and hold title to (or life estate) on the property for which aid will be granted.
- Household Income under $40,000 for single applicants or $50,000 for total household income.
- Aged 60 or over as of July 1, 2022, OR Disabled as defined by the Veterans or Social Security Administrations
The funds will be disbursed based on need as determined by the Taxation Aid Committee. Since the funds are replenished through voluntary contributions, the amount disbursed will likely vary from year to year. Any taxation aid grant will be deducted from tax bills as available. Tax aid grants must be applied for annually, and applications for FY2022 are due on October 31st, 2022. The Committee may request additional information. Notification of the Committee's decisions will be mailed to all applicants by December 31, 2022. All decisions of the Committee are final.
The information in your application for assistance will be kept confidential, and details of your application will be identified only by an assigned code.
To apply for assistance, use the Town of Mendon Taxation Aid Fund Guidelines and Application FY2023 (PDF), or you can pick up a paper copy from the Treasurer's and Assessor's Offices or the Senior Center.
Applications are due October 31, 2022.
